From My Mum’s Bookshelf to Yours: The Frog Prince

The Frog Prince by The Brother's Grimm, Before and After the Frog Prince's transformation

This story was actually requested by my Mum, and since I owe my voice to her, she deserved to have her request bumped to the very top. She told me The Frog Prince was one of her childhood favorites, and I love the thought of this story unlocking old memories for her—the kind that sit quietly in the back of the mind, waiting for just the right moment to surface. My hope is that this story does the same for you too.

Stories have always been a way for us to connect; a bridge between generations, a soft place to land at the end of the day.  Some of my earliest memories are of my Mum reading to me. We used to take hour-long walks to our favourite bookshop in Croydon, where a cosy little nook, filled with soft, colourful pillows, was always waiting for us. We’d pick a book from the shelves and read aloud for hours, her voice carrying me into worlds far beyond that little book store nook.

Eventually - and reluctantly - it would be time to go home, so we’d make a mental note of the page number. And the next weekend, we’d return to the bookstore, to continue the adventure. And if the book became a favourite? Mama would lovingly buy it for me, so the story could stay with me always.

Maybe that’s why I do what I do now, why I find so much joy in reading you to sleep.

And tonight, it’s The Frog Prince.

It’s a story of promises made, denied and kept, transformation, and unexpected endings. You might know it already, or maybe (like me) you only know the version that ends with a simple kiss. But the Brothers Grimm had their own way of telling things, and this tale is no exception.

So, if you're ready to be carried into a world of golden balls, deep wells and talking frogs, the story is waiting for you with open arms.

Rest Score: 📖📖📖 (3/5)

While simple in its structure, The Frog Prince carries an unexpected depth beneath its playful surface, with its themes of keeping one's promise and not judging by appearances. It is endearing and thought-provoking, a light yet memorable tale.
